About Me
Hello, my name is Gemma Pullar. I’m a Melbourne-based picture book author and illustrator with a background in art and education. Growing up, I spent hours watching Monkey Magic, dreaming of hidden, mystical worlds and reflecting on how those ideas appeared in my everyday life. Over time, this curiosity grew into a wider interest in ancient Eastern knowledge traditions and how they intersect with modern-day science, ideas that continue to shape the art and stories I create today.
One of the greatest joys of becoming a parent has been the chance to explore these themes with my sons — delving into curiosity, wonder, and the mysteries of life together. As a result, I’m passionate about creating books that spark creativity, celebrate nature, and encourage children to ask big questions.
I create my images using acrylic gouache and mediums, building up layers by hand. I use a dip pen for finer details and often finish work digitally — layering elements and gently erasing pencil lines. I enjoy the textures I can achieve through handmade processes, and the happy accidents that paint allows.
In 2024, I was thrilled to receive a Commended Entry in the New England Writers’ Centre Illustration Prize — a delightful nudge to keep following my creative adventures.
I live in the leafy town of Cockatoo, Australia, with my husband, our two young boys, and our deaf, old dog, Jerry. When I’m not writing or illustrating, you’ll find me wrangling my boys, painting, drinking copious amounts of herbal tea, or listening to the trees whisper their secrets in the wind — if I can hear them over the cockatoos.
